I tried and reviewed an ugly fruit called "sour sap" in Negril, Jamaica. The taste was a pleasant surprise.
From afar, I honestly thought this was a plate of clams. Not really being a clam fan, I was immediately turned off. However, I knew I had to try this fruit called sour sap, because I've never seen it in the United States before. (I'm sure you can find it somewhere.)
Here's how I'd describe sour sap: dried out clam texture with a sweet, pineapple-coconut taste that you can't help but love oh so much. It's really good if you can get past the texture and aesthetic!
