In February I won a week long trip to Ireland on the famed game show, and I want to start off by saying the show has been incredible, was was so easy to work with in the whole process, and we loved our trip and had the time of our lives.
But whenever someone brings up my winnings on The Price is Right, they always ask about how it works when you get your prizes, but the one that seems to get the most questions is how trips work.
Here are the truths behind winning a trip on The Price is Right:
1. You only have one year to use the trip, or it goes away.
Counting from the day your show airs on television, you have one year to use your trip or it gets forfeited
2. You can't give the trip to anyone.
If you're thinking to yourself: 'Well, if I won and couldn't go, I'd just let my friends go!', that's not entirely how it works. The trip is for YOU and a guest, and the rules say that you personally have to go on the trip.
3. When you go isn't entirely up to you.
So after you win a trip, the show gives you a sheet where you list the top three times when you want to go on your trip. They send off these dates to the resorts and airline companies, and the trip will get booked for one of these three dates, in order of preference. In the rare occurrence that all three dates don't work, the show will ask you to come back with three more dates until they schedule the trip. (Full disclosure: this process was incredibly easy for us, and we got our first choice)
4. You have to pay taxes on the trip.
I want to start by saying this is NOT a complaint in any way. I knew upfront that we would have to pay taxes on the trip. As far as income in concerned, the amount of the trip is logged as if you got that amount directly, so you have to pay income taxes on the amount of the trip. Even so, this means we still were able to travel overseas for incredibly cheap.
5. Everyone is REALLY helpful and accommodating
After you win the trip, the show works with a travel agency to book the trip, and everything was SO easy. They made sure we were sitting together on the plane, that the resort knew we were bringing our toddler with us, and even took care of little things we didn't think of.
6. The hotels you stay at are STUNNING.
From chatting with other contestants who had won in the past, and other players from my own episodes, the resorts they book you at are very reputable and GORGEOUS. My wife and I stayed in a 3 bedroom, two story modern lodge on a private island in Ireland, and the staff was incredibly kind and generous to us the entire trip.
