Fall Out Boy's Joe Trohman is teaming up with actor Brian Posehn and Heavy Metal Magazine to create a new horror-comedy comic book series called "The Axe," set to release early 2022.
The series is described as a cross between Army of Darkness and The Goonies as well as Heavy Metal's version of Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, Variety reports. "The Axe" follows three teenagers who steal a cursed guitar that ends up opening a portal to another dimension, leading the teens to fight ancient creatures as they attempt to get back to Earth.
"'The Axe' merges two of my favorite things — horror and comedy — but it has heart," said Trohman. "We intentially wove in themes of broken childhood, abandonment and coming-of-age throughout the book, and I am proud of the dimensions within this story."
He continued, "But on the fun side, what we were able to do with pushing the gore, the jokes, the darkness, it's just everything I've really wanted to do on a wish-fulfillment level," adding, "I am thrilled to see it come to life on the page."
Trohman and Posehn also brought in illustrator Scott Koblish and Diego Fichera, who will color the series. Matthew Medney, CEO of Heavy Metal, said he "instantly fell in love" with "The Axe" when Trohman told him about the story.
"It's always special when the human lives up to the iconic rock n' roll persona, and it's only generational when that person exceeds it," said Medney. "That is Joe Trohman in a nutshell."
"The Axe" will debut in the magazine next year as as serial before eventually being collected into a series and trade paperback. Check here to get a first look at the series.
