For many people, getting healthy, losing weight, and getting in shape is a top resolution for the new year. But one weight loss method could potentially cost you your marriage.
The Daily Mail reexamined a study from 2018 which followed the relationships of nearly 1,000 obese patients who'd undergone bariatric surgery. The study revealed 9% had divorced or separated within four years post-op, compared with 6% in a control group.
After ten years, that number went up to 17% compared to 12% in the control group.
Leader of the study, Professor Per-Arne Svensson of the University of Gothenburg, says that many people who undergo bariatric surgery to lose weight describe it as a life-changing event.
"Many things apart from just the kilos are affected: how they socialize with people, how they become more socially active," said Svensson. "A lot of people will have failed numerous times with diets before and see surgery as a last chance to get a new life. They have high expectations, but don't realize it might actually ruin their relationship."
