Data scientists looked at thousands of songs, considering stuff like song construction, production, sounds, and mood . . . but it's unclear exactly how those things measured the scariness of a song.
In any event, here are the Top 10, in no particular order:
1. "The Becoming",Nine Inch Nails
2. "The Happening", Pixies
3. "Dark Entries",Bauhaus
4. "Transmission",Joy Division
5. "Contractor",Lamb of God
6. "Ænima", Tool
7. "Heart-Shaped Box",Nirvana
8. "Bottled Up Inside",Korn
9. "Thinking of You",A Perfect Circle
10. "Eternal Refuge",Whitechapel
(Hit upRevolverMag.comto read through more about the science involved . . . not that it makes a ton of sense.)
(Interestingly, Maynard James Keenan sings on two of the Top 10, one with Tool and one with A Perfect Circle. A researcher said this could be because of the reverb effects used to accentuate the creepiness of his voice.)
(Or because he switches between a "softer, vulnerable vocal" to a "more explosive, aggressive delivery.")
