Here's What The "Minnesotan Standoff" Is, And You've Definitely Done It

If you're a Minnesotan, or even new to Minnesota, you definitely have had a moment where you've seen or been a part of a "Minnesotan Stand-Off"

Now, as far as I've seen, there are two kinds of Minnesota Stand-Offs:

  1. The last piece of food: No Minnesotan wants to take the last piece of food, and will even resort to measures like cutting it in half to avoid taking the last piece.
  2. The first piece of food: No Minnesotan wants to OPEN something, even when at a party unless they are 100% sure that someone else will support their decision.

This weekend I had a birthday party for my 2 year old son with plenty of people that we know LOVE wine. In fact, at past parties many of these people had wine. So when we were setting up for the party, we opened all of the drinks except the wine. I watched SO many people hold the wine to see if it was open, but not open it.

At the same time, I was watching people take the smallest servings possible for food, when we definitely had more, just not out for everyone to see.

Why are Minnesotans so afraid of taking the last piece, but also of opening something? Have you been in a Minnesota Stand-Off?
