A little history lesson: Some called him “The Empire Builder,” As James J. Hill expanded his railroad, he wielded his power mercilessly by threatening to bypass Minnesota towns unless they gave him their best real estate for free.Rather than risk being left to obscurity, the town of Wayzata battled the powerful businessman, but finally surrendered to Hill’s tactics and donated prime downtown Lake Minnetonka property to Hill. To be unconnected to the burgeoning railroad system was economic suicide for a town. Every year, Wayzata celebrates James J. Hill Days in September at the most beautiful station on that line that Hill built once he made peace with the town that dared challenge his might.

Just before the parade is the Running of the Meatballs is a unique and hilarious downhill race of thousands of "meatballs" (brown painted golf balls). It is not only fun to watch but an important fundraiser for the cities museum's ongoing historic building renovation projects.
Defeat of Jesse James Days - Thurs Sept 6 - Sun Sept 9

The townspeople of Northfield re-enact the James-Younger Gang's notorious 1876 bank raid on the town. The event is Minnesota's largest all-volunteer festival.

The City of Ramsey's annual hometown festival takes place in early September and is located within The COR complex off Highway 10, just north of Anoka. The festival's events include fireworks, a parade, a car show, a 5K run, live music, food vendors, and business and craft expos.
