Why Flying Over Your Spring Break Might Be A Nightmare

If you’re planning on heading out on a vacation in the coming weeks don’t expect the airports to be empty.

In fact, it seems as though a lot of people are planning trips this spring, so be prepared for headaches as you head out for your getaway.

According to the airline trade group Airlines for America, an estimated 145-million travelers are expected to take to the air from March 1st to April 30th, which is a new record. That number amounts to about 2.4-million people a day, and is an increase of 4% from last year, when 140 million travelers took spring vacations.

“With spring weather on the horizon, consumers are eager to travel and airlines are more than ready to accommodate the growth expected this year with additional seats, new aircraft and increases in staffing,” John Heimlich, the airline group’s chief economist, says.

So, how are airlines getting ready for this surge of spring travelers? Well, the group notes that the airlines are expected to add 110,000 seats per day, to accommodate 89,000 more daily passengers. In addition, airlines have added 17 new routes this year, although technically they added 151, but dropped 134.
