Gift giving is confusing around the holidays with new relationships.
When you start dating someone new between October and the new year, gift giving is a difficult subject to navigate. Do you get them a gift, or is that too much too fast? If you get them a gift, what do you get them...and what's your spending limit?
My ex bought me a ring for Christmas when we'd been dating for about two months. It wasn't a sparkly ring by any means, but still...a ring. It was easy for me to interpret it as being a relationship that would eventually get serious, but the relationship ended a couple months after that.
Dr. Nerd Love has a definitive timeline of what to get the new person you're dating for the holidays.
If you've only gone on one to four dates, they suggest giving a card, bottle of wine, or cooking dinner. When you've been together for one to three months, a dollar amount of $30 comes into play, and it counts up from there. Jewelry shouldn't be considered until you've been dating for four to six months.
