With more than enough Pronto Pups to go around, you'd think "on a stick" would be Minnesota's largest industry. Unfortunately, our largest industry is not that delicious.
According to USA TODAY, Minnesota's largest industry is ambulatory health care services, which makes a $13.6 billion GDP contribution (4.5% of total). When you put aside the weekly Target runs, hockey games, and numerous times you've plowed your driveway, it's obvious why this is the case: the Mayo Clinic.
The Mayo Clinic is just one of the four top-ten employers in Minnesota that fall under the health care category. Also attributable is the fact that only 4.1% of Minnesotans are uninsured, which is well below the 8.6% national uninsured rate. USA TODAY says those who are insured are more likely to visit the doctor than uninsured persons, therefore the demand for health care services in Minnesota is higher.
Second behind ambulatory health care services is real estate.
